That begs the question, is the "Silver/Bronze Age" Legion roaming through Justice League of America, Superman, and Countdown the original Legion or a reinterpretation fitting into the 52 multiverse?

Looks like the latter, which would be consistent with how DC is treating the new multiverse across the board.

With 50 years of Legion looming and Jim Shooter's return, I got to thinking when did the original Legion end? Was it after or before Crisis on Infinite Earths?

As far as I'm concerned the original Legion died with the Byrned revamp and the Pocket Earth nonsense.

The Lightning Saga Legion is nothing more than a retcon-filled tease meant to excite some older Legion fans. It ain't the original by any means.

After COIE, DC could have shown a lot of creativity as they never even used the idea of multiple Earths in the 30th century. Obviously the new universe would have effect 1,000 years in the future without having to make up a pocket universe.

I consider the original Legion ending after the Byrne Superman reboot..that's when the series began rewriting history.

Things got progressively worse and worse...they simply should have said that the Superboy and Superman in the Legion was from the pocket universe and that Superboy stopped traveling to the Legion when Ma and Pa Kent died (as they originally claimed).  This would have made the Silver age Superman (and Supergirl) from the pocket Universe.

Unfortunately, DC messed it up.
