Douglas Nolan & other timelines

Ferro (Andrew Nolan) Lad had a twin brother, Douglas Nolan.  When Andrew died to destroy the Sun-Eater, Douglas' mutant brain, out of grief, started defying the Time Beacon to scan the alternate timelines for one where he could be happy and at peace.

He found one where he replaced his deceased brother in the Legion, then promptly disappeared into that other timeline.

Given that potential Douglas showed, what if Andrew knew that aspect of their shared mutant power?  Either Ferro Lad could have shifted the Sun-Eater itself to another timeline, or at least FL could have shifted himself to another timeline instead of being destroyed by the absorbatron bomb.  Ferro Lad did not have to die.

OTOH, perhaps he didn't die.  Maybe this really happened and the writers just haven't written the story about which timeline he ended up in.

Or maybe it's best to just leave certain heroes dead.

Actually his twin brother was controlled by the Legion of Super Villains and attacked the Adult Legion when Superman visited the 30th Century back in those halcyon, silver age days of yore.

According to LSH #300, that was just one of the alternate future timelines that Douglas witnessed.  The nexus event that would have cemented it as the definite future for the Legion would have been the death of Shadow Lass/Woman defending the Science Asteroid in that issue.  Levitz's Legion timeline has Shady surviving that thus rendering the Adult LSV tale into a lesser alternate timeline that could no longer occur for the mainstream LSH.

It was noteworthy that that future you mentioned was the only one that gave Douglas some measure of peace before he found the one he could call his new home.

Legion #300 always bothered me.  It had always been accepted that the Adult Legion tales in Adventure were the official future of the Legion.  They finally gave in to temptation and threw out those stories in Legion 300.  
Good points about Douglas Nolan.  If he could do all that why not find a reality where his brother didn't die?

The question that particular group of issues raises that I find the most interesting is THIS:

A series of pictures are set up by the Witch to keep out the Legionnaires, detailing their future. One of them was the totally correct image that foretold that Ferro Lad would perish in a sphere of flame, foreshadowing his upcoming sacrifice to the sun eater.

Cosmic Boy moved to tear off the tarpin covering one painting that was clearly going to show his future.

Miss Terious, however, stops Cosmic Boy, saying "No! It's TOO HORRIBLE!" And Cosmic Boy stops and the adventure continues and we never return again to that particular cloth.

What would Cosmic Boy have seen if he did tear off the cloth? Unlike Ferro Lad, he had no immediate horrible death. What must it have been that it was "too horrible?" It boggles the mind.

That sounds pretty horrible to me.

Supposedly the Legionnaires, with the help of Miss Terious, cast a magical spell which prevented those horrible futures from occuring.  However, it happened to Ferro Lad right after that.  So, the spell only reverted the Hag to the White Witch and didn't change the future of the particular Legion members.
My guess is Miss Terious was lying to Cosmic Boy.  It probably depicted some other aspect of his future but Dream Girl/Miss Terious didn't want Cos to know.  Ferro Lad's death was pretty immediate and Dream Girl didn't have time to act to stop him from learning about it.  She did have time to keep Cos from finding out what the future had in store for him, and what better way to stop him than to tell him it was some "horrible" fate?
