SDCC '11: STAR TREK Meets the LEGION In Fall Crossover

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/sdcc2011-legion-star-trek-crossover-110721.html

San Diego, CA (July 21, 2011) – The original Starship Enterprise has traveled across time and space on its five-year mission, but it will be entering the DC Universe for the first time this summer. IDW Publishing is proud to announce its first-ever crossover with DC Comics’ Super Heroes in STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPERHEROES, a six-issue monthly series beginning in October 2011.

STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPERHEROES tells the tale of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise, who beam down to a planet only to discover that the planet isn’t their intended destination, or even in the right universe. At the same time, a group of “Great Darkness Saga” Legionnaires inside a time sphere find themselves cast into the 23rd century, but it’s not the 23rd century as they know it, either. STAR TREK/LEGION OF SUPERHEROES is a galaxy-spanning adventure that draws both teams together to face a menace that includes Khunds, Klingons, Borg, and other threats that aren’t quite as they should be. The egalitarian United Planets in one universe and a United Federation of Planets in another is now the Imperial Planets of Terra, a dark empire focused on war and conquest, and that’s just the beginning for this special series.

“Nothing like kicking off our first foray into the DC Universe with a story that spans dimensions and centuries,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief and the lead editor on this crossover. “As a huge fan of both of these teams and the eras we’re playing with here, as well as an admirer of the talents involved with this tale, I couldn’t be happier.”

Weaving these disparate universes and characters into a dark, foreboding and mysterious saga is Eisner-nominated writer Chris Roberson (iZombie, Superman), with art by Jeffrey and Philip Moy, both of whom have tackled the Legion and Star Trek in other forms. Phil Jimenez, will provide covers for the entire series, while each issue will also feature variant covers from classic Legion of Superheroes artists such as Keith Giffen, Steve Lightle, and Mike Grell, as well as IDW mainstay and Best Artist Eisner-nominee Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key) and others.

“We’re thrilled to be joining such iconic characters together in an exciting adventure that spans space and time,” said Bob Harras, DC Comics Editor-in-Chief.

CCI: Roberson Beams Up "Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes"

Roberson will be working with the classic incarnations of each team, with the Legion entering into the story shortly after "The Great Darkness Saga" and the Enterprise crew picking up shortly after the Original Series, at "some point near the end of the original five-year mission," Roberson said. "It's set after the last of the three seasons of the original series, amidst the various novels and comics and spinoffs they've had. The crew of the USS Enterprise has experienced everything that we've seen on television, but they are still constituted as they were on television, they haven't moved on yet."

The crossover will feature six heroes from each team, Roberson told CBR, for a very logical reason. "The limitation was based on the number of transporter pads on a Constitution-class starship," he said. "There's only six. So unfortunately, Scotty had to remain on the Enterprise." The 12 characters will encounter a changed reality, one that merges aspects of the 31st-century DC Universe and the 23rd-century's Final Frontier to the disadvantage of both. "In the altered universe they find themselves in, what's happened is that both of their histories have been obliterated by a change that's happened somewhere in the past," Roberson explained. "So the bifurcations that would have given rise to both their universes didn't happen. Elements of both their universes exist in this blended one."

"The crew of the Enterprise has returned to Earth so Kirk can give the commencement address at Starfleet Academy," Roberson said of the story's opening. "Various other members of the bridge crew are beamed down to do other things, but when they materialize on the surface, it's not the Earth they know. Something has happened to history, and the universe at large, while they were dematerialized. Meanwhile, a group of Legionnaires are returning from an unseen mission in the past to the 31st century and run into an eddy in the timestream, and the time bubble they're in basically crash-lands in the 23rd century. But the 23rd century is not one they know from history, and they are immediately forced to deal with a very unfriendly population of a very changed Earth."

Cosmic Boy versus a Klingon D-7 battle cruiser.

Spock's nerve pinch against Validus.

Why am I thinking they could wrap this whole thing up in about six panels?

The only part worth seeing will be when Saturn Girl meets Captain Kirk.  A hot (possibly jailbait) girl with the power to read minds?  Think of all the trouble Jim can get into with that set-up.

Of course this is NOT counting all the times Dave Cockrum slipped in Trek refs in his LSH art and Jim Shoooter wrote Brainy like Spock (60s edition). Roll Eyes
