I haven't actually seen either Asterix film, but I do remember thinking that Depardieu for Obelix was an inspired bit of casting. I didn't know Neil Gaiman was involved with the English script: interesting!

They were probably right not to bother to market it in the U.S., though - as I understand it, foreign films tend not to do very well there.

The band "The Thompson Twins" is better known in the US

I can't speak for the generations after me, but in the 60's and 70's, Tolkien was rather popular
