Fascinating stuff. I like the idea of another future team in the Legion time (although the Substitute Legion is great too).
Remember the Wanderers?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderers_(comics)http://members.tripod.com/originalvigilante/wanderers.htmThey were supposed to be the second main superhero team in the 30th Century, more like roaming troubleshooters as opposed to the Earth-based Legion. The Wanderers even assisted the Legion against Darkseid and were honored guests at the wedding of Duo Damsel and Bouncing Boy.
But a funny thing happened before the Wanderers finally got their own series -- all of them were MURDERED.
Not only that, but a renegade Controller collected their DNA samples, succeeded in cloning 6 of the original 7, and then fiddled a bit with their genetic makeup. So the new, "improved" Wanderers began their series with an unusual mission -- track down whomever killed them the first time around!
Unfortunately, after the opening story arc this series seemed to lose some focus. It was cancelled after 13 issues, and the last couple books were truly bizarre -- at the end, the team was abducted by aliens, and mentally influenced to fly their spaceship into a rip in space, never to be seen again.
Certainly an odd series, but I always wondered why Doug Moench felt it was necessary to kill off the original Wanderers and create his own version (with significant appearance and power changes to some characters), rather than forming an entirely original team. It was definitely an unusual "reboot" that still preserved prior continuity -- all of the Wanderers (save their original leader) literally "died and got better"!
