It's a real shame the links between science fiction and superhero comics have been more or less severed (though I hear Orson Scott Card and that Babylon 5 guy whose last name is a million points in Scrabble are writing comics now). Mostly because MY GOD, could you imagine the superhero comic the late Roger Zelazny could have written?

Julie Schwartz was, after all, a literary agent that kept in close touch with the writers of the period; in fact, I think if memory serves, Alfred Bester once did the writing chores on a DC comic. Jack Kirby at Marvel once did an unjustly overlooked and trippy 2001: Space Odyssey comic. The Atom was named after Raymond Palmer, science fiction pulp editor, who is one of the first science fiction editors to be menaced in dreams by midgets from the center of the earth. (Is it wrong to laugh at crazy people if they've obviously got it coming? I mean, jeez, Ray, "Derro?")

Mostly I know Alex Toth from his role in the creation of Space Ghost, one the absolute coolest Hanna-Barbera cartoons apart from HERCULOIDS and the HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR movie.

With Croyd Crenson, it's not like you have to imagine too hard.

That would be a tough choice for me. On one hand, Challenge of the Superfriends could be quite campy, but it had classic DC heroes and villains. The Herculoids, on the other hand, only had short episodes, but the show was good for the time period.

Yeah, I see what you mean, it was the camp add ons that made me tune out of Superfriends early...

I liked the DC ads for the Herculoids and other Saturday morning series (Space Ghost, Dino Boy in Lost Valley, etc.)...it was amazing what I would acccept in bad animation at the time...

The animation maybe bad but the stories were OK and the art & characters were designed by Alex Toth.  I loved his synchrovox designs for SPACE ANGEL even better (that oughta jog those grey cells ME Lad)
