The biggest downside to being the city that the Man of Steel has sworn to protect is that every metahuman criminal and his grandmother will sooner or later try to take him on! For this reason, the Metropolis Police Department had to form a special office designed to deal with metahuman threats.

The Special Crimes Unit of the Metropolis PD reports directly to Commissioner William Henderson and is headed up by Maggie Sawyer and "Terrible" Dan Turpin. The S.C.U. uses the latest in advanced weaponry, including many prototypes developed at the Metropolis branch of S.T.A.R. Labs. John Henry Irons, who was asked to help with the post-Braniac 13 Strykers Island, has also been working with the SCU to create new, nonlethal ways of dealing with metahuman criminals, much to the consternation of LexCorp.
