The bustling city of Metropolis! Clark Kent arrived on a day when the entire city was buzzing with excitement. The USS Constitution, a prototype space ship, was making its inaugural flight.
Suddenly, disaster! The great ship's engines began to fail. The eager crowd began to scream in horror as the giant
vessel started plummeting towards the ground. Aboard the ship, chaos reigned as the astronauts tried to wrestle control
back. It seemed certain the ship was doomed...
But Clark Kent, watching in the crowd, knew what he had to do. He leapt into the sky, flew beneath the Constitution, and
used his remarkable strength to bring the ship to a gentle landing.
People rushed forward, everyone wanting a piece of the hero. Even intrepid reporter Lois Lane, who had been aboard the
Constitution, seemed determined to find out everything she could about the man who had saved her life. Panicked, Clark
flew away, back to his parents' home in Smallville.
The overwhelming public reaction to his activities convinced Clark and his parents that he would need to have a secret identity, a way to protect his private life and those close to him while allowing him the freedom to use his special powers as the need arose. Ma helped design a special, eye-catching costume that would capture the public imagination. One old pair of Pa's glasses and some hair gel later, and the world's best-kept secret was born!
Within a short time after his public debut, all of Metropolis and even the world was aware of the brightly-clad Superman who protected the citizenry of that great city. Scofflaws and criminals soon found themselves quickly arrested and brought to justice. To most, Superman was a hero, a shining beacon of hope and symbol of truth and justice. To most, but not all...
Clark Kent, meanwhile, had established himself in Metropolis as well. He had even managed to get a job at the Daily Planet, the city's eminent newspaper, under editor Perry White.
