Title: A New Forum! Post by: Aldous on October 16, 2006, 01:41:51 AM I'm a little disoriented, but that will pass, I'm sure.
Onwards and upwards... Thanks, Rao. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Permanus on October 16, 2006, 03:00:21 AM Yep! Tempora mutantur and all that. I am rather tempted by all these exciting new buttons!
Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Sword of Superman on October 16, 2006, 02:50:09 PM Guys i'm truly confused!! :o :oBecause the forum show me that every topic have a new post and i can't understand what is new and what is not!!
Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Great Rao on October 16, 2006, 03:03:30 PM This is because as far as the new forum is concerned, every post is a new post, since they were all imported from phpBB. But in truth there haven't been that many new posts since last week.
Your best bet is probably to read through the "unread posts since your last visit" page https://www.supermanthroughtheages.com/smf/index.php?action=unread or the "most recent posts" page https://www.supermanthroughtheages.com/smf/index.php?action=recent and after reading through the top few listed, you'll get down to posts that you've already read. Then hit the "Mark All Messages" as read button on the main page and logout. You only have to do that once because of the migration. The next time you log in, the "new post" indicators should be accurate. Also note that the most recent posts are always listed at the bottom of the main page, whether you've read them or not. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: MatterEaterLad on October 16, 2006, 03:12:57 PM I've just had a couple of glitches...
My mail says I have 6 new messages, they were old but I read them, and they still registered up top...so I deleted them, and the message still show up top...I logged out and cleared cookies and my cache, and the message still show up top...the other problem I've had is I set my e-mail to be private and it still shows up in the profile, logged out, cleared cache etc. and its the same... Minor things. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Great Rao on October 16, 2006, 03:23:47 PM I think there were some problems importing the personal messages. The only way I cleared out my new messages was to get rid of them with the "prune" fuction.
I suspect that you can see your own email address in your profile, but that no one else can see it when they view your profile. At least that's what I hope. Can you see anyone else's? Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: MatterEaterLad on October 16, 2006, 03:29:03 PM Well, mine shows up in the profile but so does anyone else who has show e-mail on, for example, this list...(even though my check box is marked to hide e-mail, like Julian, I still have a mail marker in the e-mail column, and it seems to be visible in my profile).

Post by: MatterEaterLad on October 16, 2006, 03:36:42 PM Oh, BTW, this has got to be one of the more glitch-free migrations to new forum software that I've seen in a while...and I like the tan/brown skin way more than the original blue scheme...so, thanks. 8)

When I log in using a test account, you and most of the other members do not show an email address. The only ones who do on that page that you link to are Jullian, Gernot, llozymandias, Defender, and Kurt. Also, visitors who are not logged in will not be able to see any email addresses at all, nor even a member list. So: if your option to display your email address is turned on, only other members (including you) will be able to see it. If it is turned off, only you and the site administrators will be able to see it. Glad you like the color scheme but don't be surprised if it changes every now and then. I chose this one because it goes with the current forum banner. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: davidelliott on October 17, 2006, 11:49:28 AM I'm with Klar and Monk...
The colors are not Superman... what I think would be cool is using a banner from one of the old Superman letter columns.. like Metropolis Mailbag or the Superman In Action banner from the '70's (Swan's rendition of Clark racing into a phone booth and Superman flying out of it from the other side)... and using the blue and red color scheme for the forum! Just a thought... Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: davidelliott on October 17, 2006, 11:50:30 AM BTW, who is that long haired guy Supes is looking at?
Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: MatterEaterLad on October 17, 2006, 12:15:39 PM I think we'll have to wait to see what level of customization is allowable with the software or if its limited to certain "skins"...I'm not a huge fan of the tan and brown, but the initial default version was a lot of dark and light greyish blue that wasn't very Superman-like either...I figure it'll be worked out soon...

I chose a different version of the forum through the profiles menu. There are one or two different versions there (skins?) that you could choose from. The forum I have is blue and white. But anyway.... Surely the point of the forum is scintillating discussion. Does it matter so much what the forum looks like? It's the words that count. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Great Rao on October 17, 2006, 03:24:24 PM Yes, we do have a few different themes installed and you can pick which one you want to use. The plan is to install more of them down the line, and have some sort of Superman banner on each of them. Right now only the current default theme, "DilberMC," shows a forum banner.
As for "the long haired guy," he's been in the latest couple issues of Superman. I believe Kurt Busiek already talked about the story elsewhere in the forum. Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: MatterEaterLad on October 17, 2006, 03:30:07 PM Yeah, I played around with the options for myself...I like the Dilber that is now being used as default, but for some reason, the blue instead of the brown makes it harder for me to see the "sheet of paper" icon on the far left that shows a sub-forum has new posts...it was easier for me to see with the brown.

Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Aldous on October 18, 2006, 01:16:48 AM Great Rao, something missing from the little profiles beside the posts are the dates when each member joined.
I used to enjoy seeing those. Will they return? Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Great Rao on October 18, 2006, 02:51:58 PM They might, I'll have to see how much would be involved in adding that functionality. You can still see members' registration dates in their profile though.

Some members treat this as a joke, but as far as the rest of us are concerned: I like to see where each poster is from. This is the World Wide Web after all. Title: Re: A New Forum! Some members treat this as a joke, but as far as the rest of us are concerned: I like to see where each poster is from. This is the World Wide Web after all. I quite like that too; as a rule, I've found it quite practical to know where people come from so that you know if there might be a language or culture issue that could lead to misunderstandings. (Though having said that, I always get a kick out of people who put stuff like "bottled city" as their location.)Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Johnny Nevada on October 22, 2006, 12:43:05 PM BTW, who is that long haired guy Supes is looking at? That'd be Arion, the "Lord of Atlantis"---some (apparently arrogant but good-looking :-) ) wizard-type who ruled ancient Atlantis and had his own short-lived series in the mid-80's; came into play in the Superman comics during the Byrne years, as supposedly being the father of Power Girl (in that stupid "she's from Atlantis" retcon of her Earth-2 origin). Title: Re: A New Forum! Post by: Super Monkey on October 22, 2006, 02:06:36 PM Singer and poet of Methymna on Lesbos. He stayed for a long period of time at the court of Periander in Corinth. When he traveled from there to Italy, the sailors of his ship decided to kill him in order to steal his possessions. Arion, noticing the peril he was one, requested to sing one final song. He moved to the stem and sang his most beautiful song, after which his threw himself into the sea. A dolphin, attracted by his voice, took Arion upon his back and brought him safely to the Cape Taenarum, the southernmost point of the Peloponnesus. From there he traveled back to Periander where his ship arrived some time later. The sailors told the story that Arion had stayed behind in Italy, but they were exposed through the sudden appearance of Arion.

Post by: Great Rao on October 22, 2006, 08:18:16 PM The picture of Arion and Superman at the top of the default forum theme is taken from a recent issue of Superman. Arion has shown up in the latest few issues. I don't remember all the details but I believe that Kurt Busiek said something along the lines of this being a story idea that he didn't get a chance to use elsewhere, so he adapted it to Superman.
Aldous and Permanus: You're right about a user's location no longer showing up alongside posts, but like a user's last login time, the location is visible in every user's profile. Just click on the username itself to see their profile. Also, if anyone wants their location - or any other bit of text - to show up under their avatar alongside their posts, there is now an additional "Personal Text" field specifically for that purpose. Just go to your profile and enter whatever you want it to say right under where you select your avatar image. Title: Re: A New Forum! I didn't know that. Thank you. |
