Title: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Genis Vell on August 08, 2005, 06:45:33 AM As told here (https://www.supermanthroughtheages.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1665), Supeeman has his own Italian title released in newsstands, too, after a 4 year "exile" in comic shops.
And this, for me, is a great news. But now it's better than before: from issue #3 on, I'll be one of the editors! I'll write the introduction of every issue, plus some articles about Superman comics. I'm very excited by this! A job in the comics biz was my dream since I began to read superheroes.[/url] Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: TELLE on August 09, 2005, 01:53:02 AM Wow, a Superman "pro" right here on these boards!
Congratulations! I'm sure Superman couldn't have a better editor (or should I say guardian?) in Italy. What kind of Superman stories are being featured? Current reprints? Classics? Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: JulianPerez on August 09, 2005, 02:02:37 AM Have I mentioned lately how much I respect your opinions, and that you're a very, very handsome man?
I'm joking, of course, but congratulations! It's nice to know somebody's writing Superman who is familiar with the history of the character, a very sobering reversal from the business as usual seen at DC's offices these days. Could you bring translations of some of your Superman intro pieces to this very board? I'd like to read your introductions. Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! SUPERMAN MAGAZINE features the most recent stories released in the US. Issues #1/2 contain SUPERMAN/BATMAN #1/6, and from issue #3 on will be published the Superstorm relaunch, except for "For tomorrow", already appeared in another book. I hope to see soon reprints, but it will be hard: in Italy reprinted superheroes aren't very popular... You know, several readers buy the Marvel Essentials (and soon the DC Showcases) in the original edition because they aren't translated here! My dream is a reprint of the four part classic "Who took out the Super from the Superman?, my favorite pre-Crisis story. Or, even better,a chronological reprint of the whole Bronze Age from SUPERMAN #233 to ACTION #583! Several stories from 1982 to 1986 are unpublished here, but I bought them at Mile High Comics. Saw this on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Tony-Chan-AMOK-13-Cover-Art-Italian-Golden-Age_W0QQitemZ6553997098QQcategoryZ3985QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) and thought of this thread. Do they still publish AMOK in Italy? Quote This is the original cover art for AMOK #13 (The Crystal Sphere) , an Italian Golden Age(circa late 1940's) comic book reprinting the adventures of hero AMOK, a European version of the Phantom by Tony Chan. AMOK may have been started due to the embargo of American strips in Occupied Europe, but was a very popular character in his own right and his adventures were printed (and reprinted) for decades! Tony Chan (AKA Antonio Canale) was a very popular Italian artist working in the "noir" style and did much work for American publisher St. John in "Authentic Police Cases". Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Genis Vell on August 17, 2005, 03:30:59 PM No AMOK anymore, here.
And I haven't read it, sigh. Sadly, these comics from the "Italian Golden Age" are very rare and expensive, besides they aren't reprinted... By the way, here in Italy wasn't so successful, because it was too expensive for the post WW II Italians. And, if you're interested in the Italian history of DC, read my next topic! Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Genis Vell on November 04, 2005, 04:04:40 PM Released, at last!
SUPERMAN MAGAZINE #3, containing my first introduction for a comic book. It seems a dream... Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Super Monkey on November 04, 2005, 04:52:08 PM Nice!
Do you have covers that you can show us? Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Gernot on November 04, 2005, 08:14:47 PM Congrats again! :D
Hey, can you scan the covers like Super Monkey suggested, and maybe your editorial comments? I think they'd go over here pretty darned well! ;) Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! Please do post your editorial, either in Italian and/or English! :s: Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Genis Vell on November 05, 2005, 09:20:18 AM I'll post soon the cover. I haven't a scanner, and in the Publisher site there isn't still the cover image.
I don't know if my introductions can really be interesting for you... They're only something like "In the last issue Superman fought Lex Luthor, who now isn't the president anymore". But if you want, I can post my first intro here. In issue #4 will appear my latest article, about "Lois & Clark - The new adventures of Superman". Maybe this can be more interesting? I could post it in the L&C section. Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Genis Vell on November 25, 2005, 09:00:47 AM Did anyone wanted the SM #3 cover?
I haven't it. But, if you want, look at the #4 cover... (http://www.comicus.it/images/news/supmag4.jpg) It will be released the next week. Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Great Rao on November 25, 2005, 11:51:34 AM So who is the guy with the big gun?
And is it just a coincidence that the layout of that cover is almost identical to the layout of the cover in your signature? :s: Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Super Monkey on November 25, 2005, 12:53:12 PM Art Adams art is always a good choice for a cover.
I have no clue as to whom that guy in armor is. Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Captain Kal on November 25, 2005, 01:41:14 PM The armoured guy is a one-shot villain from Austen's run on Action Comics last year. He goes by the name Weapons Master.

:s: Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Gernot on November 25, 2005, 09:58:59 PM He's a bit more than a one-shot villian, Captain Kal.
Weapons Master was first used by Dan Jurgens when he wrote Justice League of America, back in 1992. He was the first bad guy the JLA faced after Superman joined the JLA on Earth-1986 (I STILL don't know what to call this Earth!). Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Captain Kal on November 26, 2005, 03:08:55 AM Thanks for the correction, Gernot. I haven't read that story so I was unaware of it.
Weapons Master does seem to be a blatant rip-off of Byrne's Bloodsport. His powers/gadgets are the same. But his motivations are different so I guess that distinguishes the two characters -- in the same way that the original Superman is different in characterization from Hugo Danner despite their having the same powers and same early adventures. Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Gernot on November 26, 2005, 09:53:33 PM I think Bloodsport came out in the early '90's, didn't he? That just means that the only person Jurgens ripped off was himself (He was a Superman writer at the time)! ;)
I guess if you're gonna rip ANYBODY off and get away with it, that person will be yourself! :D Title: Re: I'm very proud of it! (part II) Post by: Captain Kal on November 26, 2005, 10:13:17 PM Two Bloodsports appeared in the superbooks. The second one was the one you're thinking about: A white supermacist jerk. He was a product of his racism and Bloodthirst supplying him his teleporter and armoury. He appeared sometime after Superman was revived from death.
The first one appeared as a creation of Byrne's in the first year of the Byrning. This Bloodsport was intended to show the difference in character between the then-new Superman and the Rambo-style antics of Bloodsport. He was a black draft dodger consumed with guilt over not serving in Viet Nam whose brother came back a basket-case having taken the draft dodger's place in 'Nam. Both Bloodsports had that wonderful teleporter and cache of weapons to draw upon. IOW, Bloodsport was definitely a Byrne creation around 1986 or 1987 which clearly predates Jurgens' era and the above mentioned Weapons Master. |
