If the latter, I don't find any of the alternatives appealing. Superman shouldn't go out like a punk, and dying at the hands of a useless, boring character like Doomsday would be a punk's death. Superman shouldn't come back as a robot...that doesn't even make sense...and anyway if he did, then it wouldn't be an ending, but a continuance. And if Superman killed Lex, then his "legend" would die right there. However long he lived after that, he'd be no Superman. I guess the ending I always preferred was the old Superman Red/Blue story.
