A Lexcorp satellite caught a brief glimpse of an alien spacecraft approaching the planet, specifically Coast City, California. Shortly thereafter, reports came in of tremendous explosions in the region. With the White House's endorsement, the cyborg Superman flew to investigate with the Last Son of Krypton. What they found was horrifying in its implications: Coast City had been completely destroyed, and a monstrous Engine City was rising in its place.
But what was even more horrifying to the Last Son of Krypton was the identity of the architect behind the destruction of
Coast City: the cyborg Superman himself! The Cyborg turned on the Last Son of Krypton, vaporizing him. Then, still
maintaining the masquerade, the cyborg reported that Coast City had been destroyed--by the Last Son!
The clone Superman was captured by the Cyborg and learned the truth--the alien ship belonged to Mongul, who had come to Earth seeking to turn it into another Warworld with the Cyborg's help! The clone escaped and returned to Metropolis, to tell the Man of Steel of the Cyborg's treachery. The two Supermen were preparing to travel to Coast City and do battle when, amazingly, another Superman arrived on the scene!
This new Superman also claimed to be the original back from the dead. Although he had no powers, he instilled in both
the Man of Steel and the clone Superman a strange confidence. He even convinced Lois, after a brief private conversation.
The three Supermen flew to Coast City to take on Mongul and the Cyborg. During the battle they were joined by Supergirl,
who had been invisible, and Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern who had called Coast City home. Green Lantern faced and defeated
Mongul, while the others battled the Cyborg. They were joined in this by the Last Son of Krypton, now revealed to be the
Eradicator, who had returned to the Fortress of Solitude to recover his strength. Working together, these four were able
to deactivate the Engine City which would have wrenched the Earth from its orbit, and defeated the Cyborg.
Superman's return to life was nothing short of triumphal and miraculous. And, thanks to the shape-shifting powers of Supergirl, Clark Kent was soon discovered as well, alive and none the worse for his weeks trapped in the rubble following Doomsday's attack.
